Profile/Mission statement – make it keyword-rich;

Special or notable achievements – make this section keyword-rich;

Career history – strict reverse chronological order;

Skills (including languages) and professional qualifications;

Education and training;

Positive qualities;

Interests and Hobbies (preferably relevant to vacancy);

Name(s) and email and/or telephone contact details of Referee(s).

To allow for the possibility of your CV being retrieved, you should make your CV, particularly your profile and skills section, keyword-rich. For example, if the recruiter wants CVs of candidates who meet certain criteria (ie, sales manager, marketing graduate, fluent French (verbal and written), confident decision maker, five years’ managerial experience), then having these keywords, in your profile summary, if applicable, will ensure that your CV is retrieved for consideration for a given vacancy where those particular attributes are required.

Avoid heading your CV with the words ‘Curriculum Vitae’ or ‘Résumé.’ By leaving out the obvious on the first page of your CV, you save space for accommodating more relevant information.

When saving your CV document to send as an email attachment, give it a descriptive file name instead of something that may mean nothing to the recruiters who search for applications in their Inbox. For example, ‘CV_JoeBloggs_SalesManager’ or ‘CV_JoeBloggs_SalesManager_Ref123’ would be immediately recognisable as being an application unlike ‘jbsmcv.docx’ which will not be clear at all.

Work experience presented just like a job specification

Reproducing your job description on your CV is a great mistake. Besides that, it is such a waste of a great opportunity to do justice to your experience and achievements. Furthermore, it does not say whether or not you fulfilled those obligations with any measure of competence or credit.

It is not good enough to repeat your duties and responsibilities as found on your job specification without also mentioning what positive benefits you brought to the company whilst applying yourself to the tasks.

For example, (when referring to a previous role where you made a positive difference) stating ‘Trained and motivated a team of five sales executives to meet and exceed demanding monthly sales targets resulting in 15% increase in sales revenue’ would be preferable to repeating your job description which might have included ‘Training and motivating team members to meet set monthly targets’.

Applicants who are in secretarial/personal assistant or administration posts will often state in their CV, ‘Responsible for setting up from scratch and maintaining a sophisticated filing system for the entire department’. However, for all a recruiter may know, the filing system could be one that only the PA understands.

The system may be so complex that she repeatedly leaves her colleagues and superiors baffled, thereby causing serious confusion, delay and even loss of business when attempting to find and retrieve important documents in her absence, as was the case with one individual PA.

An anecdotal example

When I took time out from running my business to write the original paperback book on job hunting, I wished to refresh my memory of being an employee, again, to see how things had changed in the work place, particularly in a very large organisation. In effect, I wished to carry out a little practical research.
